Students from the Tennessee Technology Center at Newbern are competing in the SkillsUSA National Championships. The competition takes place at the H. Roe Bartle Convention Center and Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri, on June 22-24. The local quiz bowl team (Wes Inman, Michael Gorzula, Ronnie Lowery, Carley Strawn, David King, Rick Myers) and automotive technician contestant (Robert Haskell)  earned the right to compete when they won first place at the Tennessee SkillsUSA Championships this spring. They are accompanied by the Chapter Advisor Dottye Webb and Automotive Instructor Johnny Wilson.

The SkillsUSA Championships, at which more than 5000 students compete in more than 96 occupational and leadership skill areas, is held in conjunction with the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference, attended by more than 15,000 people. Students participate as voting delegates for their state, elect their national officers, conduct the business of their organization, meet with business and industry representatives, and hear from government officials.

SkillsUSA is a national organization that serves trade, industrial, technical and health occupations students in public high schools, career and technical centers and schools and two-year colleges. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives, working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce.  It helps each student to excel.

Currently, more than 16,693 teachers and school administrators serve as professional SkillsUSA members and instructors. More than 1,100 corporations, trade associations and labor unions actively support SkillsUSA through financial aid, in-kind contributions, and involvement of their people in SkillsUSA activities. Many more work directly with state associations and local chapters.
