This course is designed to prepare the student for a career in today's high tech automotive repair industry. The units of instruction are broken down into the same areas used by ASE (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence). The aim of this course is to provide trainees with a thorough understanding of the methods of servicing and repairing automotive vehicles. Trainees are taught to use the proper factory approved methods of servicing, repairing, and maintaining these vehicles. Skills and attitudes are developed that will produce safe and efficient work habits.

The Tennessee Technology Center at Newbern’s Automotive Technology program is an approved Automotive Youth Educational Systems (AYES) training site. AYES is a school to career incentive for high school juniors and seniors who meet eligibility requirements.

Automotive Technicians repair and diagnose cars and trucks. Today, many functioning components of vehicles are operated by computerized or electronic equipment. Repairing and maintaining those complex vehicles requires a special kind of expertise.

The Technician must be able to:

  • Operate diagnostic equipment used to repair vehicles

  • Make quick, accurate diagnoses of complex problems

  • Use critical thinking skills and on-line resources to determine solutions

  • Repair the vehicle as cost-effectively as possible

Being a Technician requires:

  • Analytical thinking and good reasoning ability

  • A thorough knowledge of vehicles, their various components (which are constantly changing) and their maintenance and repair

  • Mechanical aptitude

  • Sound judgment

  • Proficiency with tools and complex equipment

  • The ability to work efficiently with little or no supervision

  • A commitment to safety and following rules, regulations and guidelines
